“Siamo entrambe personalità pubbliche, viviamo a Los Angeles, siamo madri e nonne, ci piace essere innamorate e a volte siamo state folli per amore, teniamo molto alle nostre famiglie, ma mentre lei tende a commettere sempre gli stessi errori, io voglio pensare di aver imparato dai miei sbagli”. Katherine Kelly Lang non ha bisogno di presentazioni: icona di talento, bellezza ed eleganza, attrice amatissima dagli spettatori di tutto il mondo, da trentotto anni veste i panni di Brooke Logan in “Beautiful”, in onda in Italia su Canale 5.
In questa intervista esclusiva, Katherine Kelly Lang ha aperto lo scrigno dei ricordi, parlando del primo giorno sul set della soap, dei momenti più belli legati al suo personaggio, ma anche del suo debutto cinematografico nel film Skatetown U.S.A. con Patrick Swayze, dell’amore per l’Italia, della passione per lo sport ereditata dal padre e della sua collezione di moda.
Katherine, interpreta il ruolo di Brooke Logan in “Beautiful” da 38 anni, cosa pensa di aver dato al personaggio e cosa ha ricevuto da Brooke?
“La cosa principale che abbiamo in comune è il nostro aspetto, anche se Brooke si presenta quotidianamente al mondo in modo più affascinante. A me piace passare il tempo nella natura in jeans e maglietta, senza trucco, Brooke invece non esce dalla sua camera da letto se non è completamente glamour. Altre cose che ci accomunano sono i nostri caratteri ambiziosi, appassionati e forti. Siamo entrambe personalità pubbliche, conosciute da più persone rispetto a quante ne conosciamo noi. Viviamo a Los Angeles, siamo madri e nonne, amiamo essere innamorate e a volte siamo state folli per amore. Entrambe teniamo molto ai nostri cari, alle nostre famiglie e alle nostre carriere. Brooke segue il suo cuore e anch’io lo faccio. La differenza è che lei tende a commettere sempre gli stessi errori, invece a me piace pensare di aver imparato dai miei sbagli. Mi sento come Brooke solo quando entro in studio pronta per andare sul set. Alla fine della giornata, quando pronuncio la mia ultima battuta e il regista dice “stop”, lei scompare e io sono di nuovo me stessa”.

Quali ricordi conserva del suo primo giorno sul set di Beautiful?
“Sapevamo tutti che il creatore, Bill Bell, era un maestro della narrazione e che aveva ottenuto molti successi in precedenza, quindi avevamo l’idea che la serie avrebbe avuto un ottimo riscontro. C’erano molta energia, eccitazione e grandi aspettative per questo nuovo progetto. Era esaltante. Nonostante ciò, non potevamo immaginare il successo che ha avuto e il numero di stagioni che sarebbe durato. Le prime settimane di riprese sono state magiche. I set, i costumi e la sensazione di entusiasmo che si respirava erano straordinari. Sapevamo che stava accadendo qualcosa di speciale. Ho fatto il provino con John McCook. Era già un professionista affermato. È stato così gentile, incoraggiante e mi ha fatto sentire a mio agio. Onestamente non so se avrei ottenuto la parte se non fosse stato per lui. Poi il primo giorno di riprese ricordo che ho dovuto piangere nella prima scena. Brooke era stata aggredita e tornava a casa con lividi e vestiti strappati. Era in uno stato emotivo di panico. È stato difficile immergersi subito in quella scena. Avevo una tecnica di recitazione in cui mi costringevo a sbadigliare per rilassarmi e iniziare a piangere. Bill Bell mi vide sul monitor e venne a chiedermi se avessi dormito abbastanza la notte precedente. È stato imbarazzante. Ma alla fine tutto si è risolto! (sorride)”.

Nel corso della soap Brooke è stata protagonista di molte storie e ha collezionato ben 18 matrimoni, la maggior parte dei quali con Ridge (Thorsten Kaye). Se dovesse scegliere i tre momenti più belli legati al suo personaggio quali sceglierebbe?
“Gli episodi che sono stati girati nel maggio 2023 a Roma sono stati tra i più memorabili: un servizio di moda a Piazza Navona e il buco della serratura sull’Aventino, dove Ridge vede Brooke e capisce che è lei il suo destino, sono stati dei momenti divertenti. Inoltre, quando Brooke porta Ridge al Colle del Gianicolo per sorprenderlo a mezzogiorno con il Cannone del Mezzogiorno… E’ stato buffo che il mio personaggio facesse uno scherzo a Ridge. E poi la scena con Susan Flannery (Stephanie Forrester), quando è morta tra le braccia di Brooke, è stata davvero notevole. Sembrava così reale perché Susan se ne stava andando e non sarebbe più stata presente sul set. Ero davvero addolorata per la sua partenza”.
Tra le “rivali” che Brooke ha avuto nel corso della soap, con quale attrice si è divertita di più a girare le scene?
“I miei momenti preferiti sono state le scene con Susan Flannery (Stephanie Forrester). Mi è piaciuto molto lavorare con lei. Soprattutto quelle in cui il dramma tra i nostri due personaggi raggiungeva il culmine della storia. Mi piacciono anche le scene di stallo con Kimberlin Brown, che veste i panni di Sheila, così come quelle con Taylor (interpretata ora da Rebecca Budig) e Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood). Mi piace quando la posta in gioco è alta e lo scontro porta a una crisi”.
Negli episodi attualmente in onda in Italia vediamo Brooke alle prese con la figlia Hope in crisi con il marito Liam e con l’uscita di prigione di Sheila. Quali sviluppi dobbiamo aspettarci?
“Ridge e Brooke saranno felici insieme per un bel po’ di tempo. Di solito è il comportamento di sua figlia Hope a minacciare di creare una distanza tra loro. E naturalmente sembra che Taylor non sia mai molto lontana, tornando sempre in città e appostandosi dietro ogni angolo pronta a colpire quando Brooke e Ridge hanno un conflitto. Sono in arrivo anche delle belle storie di lavoro”.
Con Beautiful siete venuti in Italia diverse volte per girare vari episodi, cosa le piace di più del nostro Paese?
“Amo l’Italia. Non riesco a scegliere una sola cosa o un solo luogo. Forse uno dei momenti più belli è stato sciare e andare in bicicletta sulle Dolomiti. Ho visitato e mi sono innamorata delle Alpi, di Roma, di Milano, del Lago di Como, di Portofino, di Venezia, della Sicilia, della Sardegna, della Toscana… potrei continuare all’infinito”.
Il suo debutto cinematografico è avvenuto nel 1979 nel film Skatetown U.S.A., con Patrick Swayze. Quali sono i suoi ricordi di quel set?
“Patrick Swayze era incredibile. Veniva dal mondo della danza classica. Questo era anche il suo primo film. Era così cortese, gentile e positivo. Tutti erano in soggezione nei suoi confronti. Era bellissimo, aveva una postura e un modo di camminare incredibili grazie alla danza e tutti lo fissavano. Era un attore davvero bravo e faceva anche tutte le acrobazie”.
Sappiamo che è appassionata di sport, quali le piace praticare o seguire?
“Mio padre era un atleta olimpico e ho sempre pensato di seguire le sue orme. All’inizio volevo fare il fantino, poi equitazione olimpica. Ho praticato triathlon, gare con i cavalli su lunghe distanze e ciclismo. Ora faccio sollevamento pesi. L’esercizio fisico e lo sport sono stati e saranno sempre una parte importante della mia vita”.
Lei ha due nipoti, che tipo di nonna è?
“Mi piace portare i miei nipoti nella natura, passare del tempo al sole, fare una lunga escursione, cercare i girini nel fiume, dare lezioni di equitazione, mostrare loro che la vita non è solo videogiochi e iPhone. E poi li vizio, mi piace portarli fuori e comprare vestiti, dolcetti, giocattoli, Sono felice di stare insieme a loro facendo quello che preferiscono e mostrando loro le cose che amo io”.
Come è nata l’idea di creare la sua collezione di moda, con bellissimi caftani, abiti e accessori?
“Mia madre era appassionata di moda e aveva una boutique. Mi sembra di aver seguito le sue orme con i caftani e altri marchi di moda. Ho sempre voluto farlo e poi un giorno un partner australiano mi ha contattato e abbiamo trovato un accordo. Il resto è storia”.
Un augurio agli spettatori italiani di “Beautiful” per l’anno 2025…
“Sono tanto grata a tutti i telespettatori che in Italia seguono “Beautiful”, che ci hanno fatto entrare nelle loro case negli ultimi 38 anni, vorrei augurare loro salute, vitalità, dei momenti belli con la famiglia e gli amici, con il buon cibo, le risate e l’amore delle persone care”.

Katherine Kelly Lang needs no introduction: an icon of talent, beauty and elegance, an actress beloved by viewers around the world, for thirty-eight years she has been playing the role of Brooke Logan in “Beautiful”, broadcast in Italy on Canale 5.
In this exclusive interview, Katherine Kelly Lang opened the treasure chest of memories, talking about the first day on the set of the soap, the best moments related to her character, but also about her film debut in the movie Skatetown U.S.A. with Patrick Swayze, her love for Italy, her passion for sports inherited from her father and her fashion collection.
Katherine, you have been playing the role of Brooke Logan on Beautiful for 38 years, what do you think you have given to the character and what have you received from Brooke?
“The main thing we have in common is what we look like, although Brooke presents herself to the world in a glamorous way on a daily basis than me. I like spending time in nature in my jeans and a tee shirt with no make up. Brooke doesn’t go out of her bedroom unless she’s in full glam. Other things that we both have in common are that we’re both ambitious, passionate, strong personalities. We’re both public personalities who are known by more people than we know. We’re both living in Los Angeles and we’re both mothers and grandmothers. We both love being in love and have at times been fools for love. We both care about our families. Brooke follows her heart and so do I. We both care deeply about our families and our careers. What’s different is that Brooke tends to make a lot of the same mistakes over and over again. I’d like to think I’ve learned from my mistakes. I only feel like her when I walk into the studio ready to go on set. At the end of the day, when I say my last line and the director says cut, she disappears and I am instantly me again”.
What memories do you retain from your first day on the set of Beautiful?
“We all knew that Creator, Bill Bell, was a master storyteller, and he had so many previous successes, so we had an idea that the series would probably be successful. There was a lot of energy, excitement and high expectations for this new project. It was exhilarating. But even so, we couldn’t have imagined just exactly how successful it has become, and how many seasons it would last. Those first weeks of filming were magic. The sets, the costumes and the feeling of excitement around the set were all extraordinary. We knew something special was happening. I did my screen test with John McCook. He was already an established pro. He was so kind, encouraging and made me feel comfortable. I honestly don’t know if I would have gotten the part if it weren’t for him. Then on the first day of filming. I remember I had to cry in the first scene. Brooke had been assaulted and came home with bruises and her clothes ripped. She was in a panicked emotional state. It was tough to dive right in to that. I had an acting technique where I make myself yawn in order to relax and start crying. Bill Bell saw me on the monitor and came and asked me if I had had enough sleep the night before. It was embarrassing. But in the end everything worked out!”.
Over the course of the soap Brooke has been featured in many stories and has collected as many as 18 marriages, most of them to Ridge. If you had to choose the three best moments related to her character which ones would you choose?
“The episodes that the series shot in May 2023 in Rome were among the most memorable, a fashion shoot at the Piazza Navona and the Aventine Keyhole, where Ridge sees Brooke and realizes she is his destiny were fun. Also, when Brooke takes Ridge to the Colle del Gianicolo to surprise him at noon with the Cannone del Mezzogiorno. It was fun that her character pranked Ridge. The scene with Susan Flannery (Stephanie Forrester) when she died in Brooke’s arms really stands out. It seemed so real because Susan was actually going away and wasn’t going to be around the set any more. I was really grieving her departure”.
Among the “rivals” Brooke has had over the course of the soap with which actress did she have the most fun shooting scenes?
“My favorite moments were usually scenes with Susan Flannery (Stephanie Forrester). I loved working with her. Especially the ones when the drama between our two characters peaked at the culmination of a story line. I also like the stand-off scenes with Kimberlin Brown as Sheila, as well as the ones with Taylor (played now by Rebecca Budig) and Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood). I love it when there are high stakes and conflict comes to a crisis”.
In the episodes currently airing in Italy we see Brooke struggling with her daughter Hope in crisis with her husband Liam and with Sheila’s release from prison. What developments should we expect?
“Ridge and Brooke will be happy together for quite some time. But coming up usually it is Brooke’s daughter Hope’s behavior that threatens to drive a wedge between Brooke and Ridge. And of course it seems like Taylor is never very far away, always coming back into town and lurking around every corner ready to pounce with Brooke and Ridge have a conflict. There are some great business stories coming up too”.
With Beautiful you have come to Italy several times to film various episodes, what do you like most about our country?
“I love Italy. I can’t choose just one thing or one place. Maybe one of the highlights has been skiing and also cycling in the Dolomites. I have visited and fell in love with the Alps, Rome, Milan, Lake Como, Portofino, Venice, Sicily, Sardinia, Tuscany…I could go on and on”.
Your film debut came in 1979 in the movie Skatetown U.S.A., starring Patrick Swayze. What are your memories of that set?
“Patrick Swayze was incredible. He came from the ballet world. This was his first movie as well. He was so gracious and kind and positive. Everyone was in awe of him. He was beautiful. He had this amazing posture and way of walking because of his dancing and everyone would just stare at him. He was a really good actor and did all his own stunts, too”.
We know you are passionate about sports, which ones do you like to play or follow?
“My dad was an olympic athlete and it was always in my mind. I did always think about following in his footsteps and becoming an athlete as well. And I have always kept sports as a major part of my life. I wanted to be a jockey at first, then an Olympic equestrian. I’ve done triathlons, long distance cross-country horse races, and cycling. Now I lift weights. Exercise and sports will always be a big part of my life”.
You have two grandchildren, what kind of grandmother are you?
“I love getting the kids out in nature. Spending time in the sun. Going for a long hike. Looking for tadpoles in the river. Showing them there’s more to life than video games and iPhones. But then I spoil them. Outfits and little toys, and movies. I give them horseback riding lessons. I like to treat my grandkids. I like to take them out and buy them clothes and treats and things to play with. I love to spend time with them doing the things they love and showing them the things I love”.
How did the idea of creating your fashion collection come about, with beautiful kaftans, dresses and accessories?
“My mom was into fashion and had a boutique. I feel like I have followed in her footsteps with the kaftans and other fashion brands. I had always wanted to do it and then one day an Australian partner approached me and we really hit it off. The rest is history”.
A wish to the Italian viewers of “Beautiful” for the year 2025…
“I’m so grateful to all the viewers in Italy who have invited us into their homes for the last 38 years and I would love to wish them health, vitality, good times with family and friends, with good food, laughter and love from those close to you”.
