Tara McDonald è un’icona di stile e stella della pop dance, ha collaborato con producer del calibro di David Guetta, Snoop Dogg, Afrojack, Axwell e tanti altri, con i quali ha scalato le classifiche internazionali grazie alla sua inconfondibile voce, ha scritto e prodotto il suo ultimo brano “TAXXXI” insieme ai francesi Laurent Jaccoux e Kim N’Guyen.
Il singolo è un’ulteriore conferma della carriera solista dell’artista come cantautrice e producer dopo hit come “I Need a Miracle” che è stata prima in classifica in Belgio, Portogallo e Repubblica Dominicana, “Love Me”, canzone che l’ha vista collaborare con Juan Magan e Urband5 e che ha avuto uno strepitoso successo in centro America e “Shooting Star” in cui la regina della dance ha fatto un featuring con la regina dell’R&B Zaho.
Tara McDonald si appresta ora a conquistare i club europei con 10 nuovi remix di “TAXXXI”, frutto della collaborazione dei migliori DJs dell’attuale scena dance inglese: 2 Below, Charlo, Contraband99, Dj Pioneer & TJ Remix, Ghetto Gentz, Leon Lour, Redfield.
In questa intervista che ci ha gentilmente concesso, Tara McDonald ci ha parlato del singolo “Taxxxi”, del suo impegno sociale, dei progetti futuri e di tanto altro.
Ciao Tara, ci racconti com’è nato il tuo nuovo singolo Taxxi, di cui sono stati realizzati anche 10 nuovi remix?
“Taxxxi” è la mia canzone preferita. Si ispira alla musica pop che amo degli anni ’80. E’ un bel brano dalle sonorità pop, fresco, e racconta una storia sexxxy liberamente basata su una pazza notte che ho vissuto a Londra … in un taxi! L’ho soprannominata “50 sfumature di Taxxxi”! (ride). E’ stato tutto abbastanza strano, in realtà stavo facendo una sessione di scrittura per un altro artista pop, ma la canzone mi piaceva così tanto che non potevo separarmene. Ho firmato il contratto per il mio nuovo disco grazie a questa canzone e quindi qualunque cosa accadrà sarò sempre grata a questo pezzo che mi ha già dato tanto. Ho co-scritto Taxxxi a Parigi, la produzione le ha dato quel tocco chic tipicamente francese. Abbiamo realizzato anche il videoclip a Parigi. È stata una notte lunghissima, ma sono davvero felice di aver girato insieme a un sensuale modello maschile. Uno dei miei momenti favoriti nel rilascio di un singolo è l’invio ai Dj/produttori delle parti per i remix. Su “Taxxxi”, ho scelto di coinvolgere nuovi talenti che al momento vanno molto forte nel Regno Unito. È eccitante perché ogni remix è diverso, non ho mai imposto alcun vincolo o dato indicazioni perché voglio che si sentano liberi e mi sorprendano. La canzone è nella top 25 delle club charts del Regno Unito e continua a salire”.
Ti sei esibita insieme a molte leggende rock e pop come Bryan Ferry, Roger Taylor, Roger Walters, Andy Taylor, Eric Clapton e tanti altri. Cosa ti hanno lasciato queste esperienze e con chi ti piacerebbe collaborare?
“Lavorare con artisti già affermati, condividere il palco con loro ed essere considerati come colleghi è stata un’esperienza incredibile e mi ha insegnato molto. Lavoro nel mondo dello spettacolo da quando avevo 9 anni e ho sempre sognato di essere una popstar ma non sapevo come fare per realizzare questo sogno! Poi mi è stata data l’opportunità di iniziare a cantare per altri artisti, e nonostante la mia esperienza passata ero incredibilmente nervosa nell’affrontare questa nuova avventura, che alla fine mi ha dato molta più fiducia nelle mie capacità di cantante, in quanto questi artisti avrebbero potuto scegliere chiunque al mio posto per lavorare con loro. Sono felice che abbiano scelto me. Ho imparato tanto da ogni artista in quanto sono tutti diversi e si aspettano da te cose diverse. Ad esempio, quando lavoravo con Bryan Ferry nel suo album Dylanesque, ha chiesto il mio contributo riguardo le parti vocali e su quali armonie usare perché questo era un progetto nuovo per lui e stava lavorando praticamente da zero. E’ stato un grande privilegio essere coinvolta in quel modo nella creazione di questo disco. Con Eric Clapton abbiamo lavorato in modo diverso. Stavamo eseguendo alcuni dei suoi brani più famosi dal vivo, così che le sezioni vocali fossero già state scritte e abbiamo mantenuto le canzoni fedeli alle sue registrazioni originali. Ho imparato ad adattarmi rapidamente, a mantenere la calma sotto pressione e queste esperienze sono state delle ottime basi per iniziare il mio progetto solista. Adoro collaborare con gli artisti, anche nel mio prossimo singolo ci sarà un featuring. Ci sono molte persone che ammiro, con cui mi piacerebbe collaborare. Però deve essere la canzone giusta e il momento giusto. Dato che il mio gusto musicale è abbastanza vario, potrebbe essere un artista che proviene da qualunque genere, dal reggae, dal country al rap. Non ha senso elencare i nomi in quanto dipende da ogni singolo progetto”.
Vieni definita la Regina della dance. Ti ritrovi in questa definizione?
“Adoro essere chiamata “Regina”. Mi sono fatta conoscere grazie alla dance music. Poi sono stata fortunata, ero al posto giusto nel momento giusto. Non fraintendermi, per anni ho lavorato sodo, esibendomi in qualsiasi posto: club, pub fino alle sessioni di studio vocale. All’inizio ho suonato in posti non bellissimi nel Regno Unito, con il mio sistema di amplificazione. Avevo così voglia di sfondare nel mondo della musica che facevo qualsiasi cosa per farmi notare e creare più contatti. Credo di essere stata soprannominata Regina del ballo per le mie collaborazioni con Axwell, Todd Terry, Armand van Helden, David Guetta … E sono stata fortunata perché queste canzoni sono diventate hit in tutto il mondo. Altrimenti sarei stata chiamata “la regina di … niente”! (ride). Questo mestiere è così fottutamente difficile, la gente non lo sa a meno che non ci sia davvero dentro. Queste collaborazioni hanno cambiato la mia vita e sarò sempre grata per questo”.
Come ti sei avvicinata alla musica?
“Con la musica dance. I DJ, i produttori tendono ad inviare basi strumentali quasi finite e spetta al cantautore trovare un testo e una melodia accattivanti. E’ stato naturale per me poiché quando per vivere, dopo essermi trasferita a Londra, facevo la gogo dancer nei night club, venivano suonati soprattutto dischi strumentali e mi inventavo una canzone nella testa per seguire i ritmi. La cosa più importante per me è fidarmi dell’ispirazione. Quando hai fiducia nell’idea, tutto scorre come l’acqua. Quando scrivo, è importante avere un messaggio e un titolo forti. Devo essere in grado di vedere la canzone visivamente come un film mentre la storia si sviluppa. Per il mio progetto solista, sto lavorando con un piccolo team. Il mio nuovo modo di lavorare preferito è quando i miei produttori arrivano con alcuni loop o campioni, il che è fantastico perché fin dall’inizio si crea un grande entusiasmo e questo fa sì che la mia immaginazione sia libera di volare”.
Quali sono gli artisti che più hanno influenzato la tua musica?
“Sono tanti gli artisti hanno lasciato un segno su di me! Mi piacevano principalmente gli audaci e i coraggiosi! Artisti con le palle, maschi o femmine che osano essere diversi. Sono una grande fan di Freddie Mercury, l’ho amato per la sua originalità con la sua musica epica e gli abiti stravaganti. Mi piace Madonna per la sua libertà sessuale, la sua forza come artista e come donna che ha fatto delle canzoni pop divertenti super cool! I miei eroi moderni sono Beyoncè, che è un modello di riferimento e, naturalmente, Lady Gaga, che è stata la prima artista mainstream femminile a parlare di persone transessuali nel suo disco Born This Way!”.
Hai prestato negli anni la tua voce per importanti cause sociali. In che modo secondo te la musica può migliorare la società in cui viviamo?
“La musica è un altro modo per aprire le porte, mantenere vivo il confronto e rendere più accessibile una tematica. Penso che la musica abbia realmente il potere di smuovere le persone emotivamente. Gli artisti mettono il proprio cuore quando scrivono una canzone e quando questo avviene il pubblico lo percepisce e canta insieme quella canzone. Queste sono le emozioni. La musica è personale e possiamo ascoltarla in posti molto privati, ad esempio quando sei a letto. Può essere un modo più divertente per far pervenire un messaggio piuttosto che ascoltare qualcosa da un politico! Inoltre, gli artisti tendono a spingere solo soggetti in cui credono al 100% e non hanno programmi nascosti (diversamente dai politici), così le persone possono fidarsi di loro. Sono personalmente impegnata a utilizzare la mia piattaforma per promuovere l’uguaglianza. Sento che è una mia responsabilità. Aiuta quando un uomo dice di essere a favore delle donne, quando una persona bianca si impegna per una persona di colore o una persona eterosessuale per la comunità LGBTQ. Altre voci rendono il messaggio più forte! Credo nel potere delle persone, più si è e più si fa la differenza e poi si arriva a un punto in cui è impossibile ignorare. In realtà sto scrivendo una bella canzone pop con un tema femminista, voglio contribuire alla crescita del movimento femminista! Sono anche una vegana orgogliosa, sono passati solo 10 mesi e questa è una delle migliori scelte personali che abbia fatto per me stessa. I miei sentimenti di uguaglianza non riguardano solo gli esseri umani, ma includono anche tutte le specie viventi. Credo che gli animali abbiano il diritto di vivere e non siano sul pianeta solo per essere un ingrediente in un pasto, o per essere testati. Hanno il diritto di vivere una vita lunga e felice come noi. La cosa triste è che non possono parlare, quindi è importante che io affronti questo tema in ogni intervista. Da quando sono diventata vegana (per motivi di salute e di ambiente) ho iniziato ad essere più consapevole della crudeltà che imperversa ogni giorno. È scioccante sapere che oltre 56 miliardi di animali da allevamento vengono uccisi ogni anno dagli umani. Queste cifre non includono pesci e altre creature marine le cui morti sono così numerose da essere misurate in tonnellate. È pazzesco e in realtà è più salutare per i nostri corpi e per l’ambiente non mangiarli!”.
Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?
“Il mio futuro immediato è tutto incentrato sulla musica! Sto realizzando il mio primo album. L’anno scorso ho firmato un nuovo contratto discografico. Questa seconda chance per me è stata come vincere la lotteria o milioni di euro, dato che prima avevo un contratto con un’altra etichetta ma non ha funzionato! Sono così eccitata di essere in studio quasi tutti i giorni a inventare nuove canzoni e, naturalmente, l’obiettivo finale è quello di girare il mondo per presentarle dal vivo! Mi sento estremamente creativa e molto orgogliosa delle canzoni che sto scrivendo, mi sento libera di esprimermi e questa è la cosa più importante per me. In realtà, il mio album parla di libertà. Ho anche creato la mia agenzia musicale chiamata “Give Me More Music”. La mia strada nell’industria musicale è stata lunga! Non sapevo come entrare, quindi ho accettato qualsiasi lavoro e ho fatto molti errori, ma ho anche avuto molti successi e ho un sacco di esperienza da offrire. Ho avuto l’idea di avviare la mia agenzia musicale dopo essere stata coach a The Voice of Belgio, per fare qualcosa di più per i concorrenti una volta terminato il programma”.

Hi Tara, can you tell us how your new “Taxxxi” single was born, of which 10 new remixes were also made?
“Taxxxi” is my guilty pleasure song! 😀 Its inspired by the cheesy pop tracks I love from the 80’s. It’s not trying to be clever, it’s not pretentious, just a feel-good pop record with a sexxxy storyline loosely based upon one crazy night I had in London… in a taxi! I’ve actually nicknamed it “50 shades of Taxxxi”! 😀 Funnily enough, I was actually in a writing session for another pop artist but I loved the song so much I couldn’t part with it. I signed my new album deal on this record. So, whatever happens I will always be grateful to this track as it has already brought me so much. I co-wrote this song in Paris and I think the production had a chic French touch, I had the vocal hook almost immediately with the chorus lyrics. It came together effortlessly, which isn’t always the case. We made the music video in Paris too. It was a loooooooooong night, but I’m really happy with it as I had to make out with a hot male model! :DOne of my favourite parts of releasing a record is to send the stems to DJ/producers for remixes. On “Taxxxi”, I chose to use new hot fresh talent that are buzzing in the UK at the moment. It’s exciting as each remix is different, I never put any constraints or give briefs as I want them to feel free and surprise me. The song is top 25 in the UK club charts and still climbing!
You have performed along with many rock and pop legends such as Bryan Ferry, Roger Taylor, Roger Walters, Andy Taylor, Eric Clapton and many others. What did these experiences leave you with and who would you like to collaborate with?
Working with already established artists, sharing the stage with them and being considered as a colleaguewas such an incredible experience and learning curve. I have been working professionally in the entertainment business since I was 9 years old and always dreamed of being a popstar but didn’t know how to connect the dots! Then I was given the opportunity to start backing singing for other artists, despite my past experience I was incredibly nervous as there’s such a high level of quality to live up to. But it gave me so much more confidence in my abilities as a vocalist, as these people could choose anyone to work with. So happy they chose me! I learnt different things from each artist as everybody is different and what they expect from you is also different. For example, when I was working with Bryan Ferry on his Dylanesque album, he was keen to have my input regarding the backing vocals and what harmonies to use as this was a new album for him and he was working from scratch. It was such a privilege to be included in that way, he’s so open to new ideas. With Eric Clapton, is was very different again. We were performing some of his best known hits live so that vocal sections were already written and we kept things true to his original recordings. I guess I learnt to adapt quickly, keep cool under pressure and these experiences have been a great foundation to start my own solo project. I love collaborating with artists, I’m actually finishing my next single now and will have another artist featuring on it. There are many people I admire, I would love to work with. It has to be the right record, the right song and the right time. As my musical taste is quite diverse, it could be anyone from reggae, country to rap. It doesn’t make sense to list names as it depends on each individual project.
It is called the Queen of dance. Do you find yourself in this definition?
I love being called “Queen” anything! 😀 I made my name in dance music. I had a lucky break, right place at the right time kind of scenario. Don’t get me wrong I had been working my arse off for years, performing at anyplace that would have me from singer/songwriter, clubs, pubs to vocal studio sessions! At the beginning, I toured ever shitty places in the UK and I had my own PA system, I was so hungry to make it happen! 😀 Anything to get me noticed and make more connections. I guess I’ve been called the Queen of dance because of my collaborations with Axwell, Todd Terry, Armand van Helden, David Guetta… And I was lucky as these songs became worldwide hits and dance anthems. Otherwise I would have been called “the Queen of… nothing”! :DThis business is so fucking hard, people don’t know it unless they’re really in it. You want to call me “the Queen of dance”, hell yeah! 😀 These collaborations changed my life and I will always be grateful.
How did you approach the music?
With dance music DJ;s/producers tend to send over almost finished instrumentals and it’s up to the songwriter to find a concept and a catchy melody. It comes naturally to me as I used to be a gogo dancer in nightclubs for a living when I first moved to London. The clubs mostly played instrumental records and I would always be making up a song in my head over the beats. The most important thing for me is to trust in the inspiration. When you have faith in the idea, it flows like water. When you start second guessing yourself it makes songwriting so much harder! When I’m writing, it’s important to me that I have a strong message and title, then I have a great foundation to begin. I have to be able to see the song visually like a movie as the story develops. For my solo project, I’m working with a small team, my new favourite way of working is when my producers arrive with some loops or samples, which is great as it sets a vibe from the get go. Then, just let my imagination run free.
Which artists have most influenced your music?
So many artists have left a mark on me! I mainly gravitate to the bold and the brave! Artists with balls, male or female that dare to be different. I’m a massive Freddie Mercury fan, I loved his originally with his epic music and crazy outfits. Madonna for her sexual liberation, her strength as an artist and as a business woman who made fun pop songs super cool! My modern day heroes are Beyonce who’s such a good role model and of course Lady Gaga the first female mainstream artist to talk about Trans people in her Born This Way record!
You have lent your voice over the years to important social causes. In what way do you think music can improve the society in which we live?
Music is another way to open doors, keep the conversation going and make a subject more accessible. I think there is a real power in music that moves people emotionally. People can pour they hearts out writing a song and when it connects, people will pour their hearts out singing along to the song. It’s all about emotion. Music is very personal and where we listen to it can be in very private places, when your tucked up in bed for example. It can be a more fun way to deliver a message than hearing something from a politician! Also, artists tend to only push subjects that they believe in 100% and have no hidden agendas (unlike politicians) so people can trust them. I am personally committed to use my platform to promote equality. I feel it’s my responsibility. It helps when a man says he’s a feminist, when a white person stands up for a person of colour or a straight person stands up for the LGBTQ community. More voices make the message louder! I believe in people power, more numbers make more difference and then it comes to a point where it’s impossible to ignore. I’m actually writing a feel good pop song with a feminist theme, I want to be part of the conversation and keep the feminist movement growing! I’m also a proud vegan, it’s only been 10 months and this is one of the best personal choices I have made for myself. My feelings of equality isn’t just for humans but also includes all living species. I believe animals have the right to live and are not on the planet to just be an ingredient in a meal, or to be tested on. They have the right to live a long and happy life the same as us. The sad thing is they can’t speak up for themselves, so it’s important that I speak about this in every interview. It’s only since I became vegan (which started out for health and environmental reasons) that I started being more aware of the cruelty that happens every day. It’s shocking to hear that over 56 billion farmed animals are killed every year by humans. These shocking figures do not even include fish and other sea creatures whose deaths are so great they are only measured in tonnes. It’s crazy and actually its healthier for our bodies and the environment not to eat them!
What are your future plans?
My immediate future is all about music! I’m making my first album. I signed a new record contract last year and it’s like I’ve won the lottery or Euro millions to have another chance as I was signed to another label before and it didn’t work out! I’m so excited as I’m in the studio most days coming up with new songs and of course the end goal is to tour the world singing these new songs live! I feel super creative at the moment, very proud of the songs I’m writing, I feel very free to express myself and this is the most important thing to me. Actually, my album is all about freedom. I’ve also set up my own music management company called “Give Me More Music. My road into the music industry has been one long arsed road! 😀 I didn’t know how to get in, so I took any job I could get my hands on and made many mistakes but also had many successes andleant a hell of a lot and have a lot of experience to offer. I had the idea to start my own management company after being a coach on The Voice in Belgium, I loved it but was also frustrated as after the TV show finished I couldn’t do more for the contestants so decided to make my own company. 2018 for me is all about my album.
