Rachael Carpani, attrice australiana di grande talento, capace di regalare emozioni interpretando ruoli sia drammatici che leggeri, è tra i protagonisti al fianco di Paul Hogan del film “The very excellent Mr. Dundee”, diretto da Dean Murphy, disponibile in Australia dal 17 luglio su Amazon Prime Video e prossimamente anche in altri Paesi.
Nel cast della pellicola, distribuita da Transmission Films, troviamo anche John Cleese, Olivia Newton-John, Shane Jacobson, Julia Morris, Jim Jefferies, Reggie VelJohnson, Wayne Knight.
Paul Hogan interpreta se stesso e vorrebbe solo una vita tranquilla. Abita a Brentwood, in California, è in pensione, è contento di fare il cruciverba quotidiano e di ricevere giornalmente le chiamate di Lucy, la sua deliziosa nipote di 10 anni che vive a Sydney.
Così, quando la sua agente Angie (Rachael Carpani) lo informa che riceverà un’onorificenza per i servizi dati alla commedia rifiuta l’offerta. Lucy però lo chiama e gli riferisce che quando ha detto ai bambini della sua nuova scuola che al nonno è stato offerto un Cavalierato hanno riso di lei. Paul allora si rende conto che ha bisogno di ottenere l’onorificenza per aiutare la nipote a salvare la sua reputazione.
In questa intervista che ci ha gentilmente concesso Rachael Carpani ci ha parlato del suo personaggio, Angie, ma anche di com’è stato lavorare con Paul Hogan in “The very excellent Mr. Dundee”, del suo amore per l’Italia, terra natale di suo padre, di Jodi Fountain, ruolo che ha interpretato per sei anni nel celebre telefilm “McLeod’s Daughters”, attualmente in onda in Italia su Paramount Channel, e dell’esperienza in “Touched” al fianco dell’indimenticabile Doris Roberts.
E’ disponibile su Amazon Prime Video, al momento in Australia e prossimamente anche in Europa, il tuo nuovo film “The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee”. Com’è stato lavorare con Paul Hogan che è considerato una leggenda vivente?
“Sì, “The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee” è disponibile in Australia su Amazon Prime Video dal 17 luglio e si spera che ci possano essere delle uscite in altri Paesi prossimamente. E’ vero, molti si riferiscono a Paul Hogan come a una leggenda vivente, ma tutte le idee preconcette riguardanti una persona di solito scompaiono, per quanto mi riguarda, prima che cominci a lavorare insieme sul set, vedendola semplicemente come co-protagonista e collega e non come una “leggenda vivente”. Questo rende più facile comunicare al regista le idee in modo uguale per ogni attore, e soprattutto se stai facendo una commedia, sentirsi uguali ti permette di lavorare come una squadra e vedere che la tua voce è importante come quella di tutti gli altri. Paul era così disponibile che è stato facile recitare insieme, abbiamo chiacchierato tra una ripresa e l’altra e ha sicuramente guadagnato la reputazione di narratore! Ha tanti aneddoti da raccontare e nonostante la sua età ha messo così tanta energia in ogni singolo giorno di ripresa. Lui e il nostro meraviglioso Direttore Paul Murphy hanno collaborato per parecchi anni in molti progetti, senza soluzione di continuità. Ben presto anch’io mi sono sentita a mio agio sul set. E’ stata una grande esperienza”.
Puoi presentarci Angie, il tuo personaggio?
“Il mio personaggio si chiama Angie Douglas. Interpreto la Talent Manager di Paul Hogan. Passo la maggior parte del film cercando di convincere il riluttante Paul a incontrare i dirigenti dello studio per riaccendere la sua carriera. Angie ha ereditato Paul come cliente da suo padre, e onestamente non le piace molto cercare di gestire la sua carriera, ma una volta che viene a sapere che Hogan è in lizza per ricevere un “Cavalierato” dal Palazzo, inaspettatamente scopre che il suo nuovo lavoro è cercare di tenerlo lontano dai guai per poche settimane, finché non volerà nel Regno Unito per ricevere il Cavalierato. Come si scoprirà ben presto sarà un lavoro quasi impossibile!”.

Ci racconti qualche aneddoto divertente accaduto sul set?
“Onestamente, come accade per la maggior parte dei set, un attore è per lo più in attesa di girare e ci sono molte pause mentre la troupe imposta la scena successiva. Ma naturalmente ci sono stati i soliti errori che hanno portato a una risata incontrollabile. Con Paul Hogan c’è sempre stato un momento in cui alzavi lo sguardo e lui era, per qualche motivo inspiegabile, a rifare la scena con una parrucca di Elvis o qualcosa del genere… Ama prendere in giro le persone o gli eventi, è così che ha iniziato, in uno show ‘skit’ qui in Australia, e penso che sia ancora il suo primo amore”.
Tra i ruoli che hai interpretato c’è anche quello di Jodi Fountain in McLeod’s Daughters una serie molto amata anche qui in Italia. Che ricordi conservi di quel periodo?
“Sono così felice di sentire che il telefilm McLeod’s Daughters sia ancora visto e amato in Italia! Questo mi scalda il cuore. Quando ho iniziato a lavorare a quello spettacolo nel ruolo di Jodi Fountain nel 2001 ero abbastanza giovane ed era il mio primo ruolo a lungo termine. Ho vissuto nel Sud Australia (dopo essermi trasferita dalla mia città natale, Sydney) per girare McLeod’s Daughters per poco più di sei anni, è stata praticamente tutta la mia vita per quel periodo. Posso dire onestamente ancora oggi che è stato il più duro, meraviglioso, lavoro educativo che abbia mai fatto. I produttori e gli sceneggiatori mi hanno dato un’opportunità che non molti attori hanno: crescere il mio personaggio sullo schermo per molti anni… in un certo senso, permettendo al pubblico e ai fan di crescere con Jodi in quelle sei stagioni e mezzo in cui è stata presente nella serie “Mcleod’s Daughters”. C’era una vera fattoria, degli agricoltori veri e dei cowboy che ci davano lezioni ogni giorno, la casa era reale, non c’era nessuno studio di registrazione, abbiamo lavorato, cast e intera squadra di produzione, nelle estati australiane più calde e negli inverni gelidi del Sud Australia, e credo che questa esperienza mi abbia reso più forte, mi abbia aiutato a crescere e sicuramente mi abbia preparato per questo mestiere. La serie, la terra, i personaggi, la troupe, le caratteristiche dell’adorabile Jodi… la voce “alta” che le ho dato, le sue mani eccessivamente espressive quando parlava, la sua mancanza di coordinazione e i suoi sogni senza fine di amore e avventura erano ciò che amavo di lei. E ancora oggi ringrazio gli sceneggiatori per avermi permesso di interpretare un personaggio fallibile. Jodi vedeva sempre il lato più luminoso dell’esistenza e sapeva ridere di quello che le capitava. È stata davvero una parte sorprendente della mia vita e McLeod’s Daughters rimarrà nel mio cuore per sempre”.
Posie Graeme-Evans ha annunciato che sta scrivendo la storia del reboot “McLeod’s Daughters Movie”. Ti piacerebbe prendervi parte?
“Sì, so che McLeod’s Daughters Movie è stato scritto, come annunciato da Posie Graeme-Evans, e nessuno sa ancora chi parteciperà, dove sarà ambientato o quali personaggi ritorneranno…. Ma sono sicura che alla maggior parte degli attori piacerebbe reinterpretare il proprio ruolo a Drovers Run”.
Nel film “The way back” con Ben Affleck, invece, interpreti il ruolo di Diane…
“Sì, ho avuto un piccolo ruolo in “The Way Back” diretto dallo straordinario Gavin O’Conner, ma è stata una grande esperienza. Ho girato solo a L.A. per un paio di settimane, poco prima di volare a Melbourne per iniziare le riprese di The Very Excellent Mr Dundee”.
Che esperienza è stata recitare con Doris Roberts in “Touched by Romance”?
“Mi spezza il cuore pensare che Doris Roberts non sia più con noi, ho avuto una bellissima esperienza lavorando al suo fianco nel film “Touched”. In pratica interpreto un’infermiera assunta per prendersi cura di una donna malata che sta morendo. Una volta era una scrittrice di grande successo e il mio personaggio l’aiuta a trovare la sua gioia interiore, a riconciliarsi con suo figlio, a vedere la bellezza che c’è ancora nel mondo e ad affrontare la morte come un’altra bella parte della vita. Era uno dei miei ruoli preferiti”.
Hai origini italiane?
“Mio padre è nato ad Ascoli Piceno, nelle Marche. Lui e la sua famiglia sono emigrati a Sydney, in Australia, nel 1956, e da allora vive qui, anche se ha fatto molti viaggi per lavoro in Italia. Siamo tornati di nuovo nella città natale di mio padre con la famiglia e ho colto ogni occasione che ho avuto per viaggiare e conoscere l’Italia e tutto ciò che ha da offrire…. soprattutto il cibo (adoro le olive all’Ascolana!)”.
Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti?
“(Ride)… Mi piace sempre sorprendere le persone mantenendo segreti i miei piani futuri…. almeno per ora!”.
Come hai vissuto queste settimane di lockdown?
“Sono stata ufficialmente in quarantena soltanto per circa tre settimane, ma poi con le restrizioni che cambiavano continuamente per i diversi paesi, qui in Australia, sono uscita di casa solo per comprare l’essenziale. Mi considero molto fortunata ad aver avuto la possibilità di restare a casa e sono estremamente grata nei confronti di tutti i nostri operatori sanitari, essenziali e in prima linea, che continuano a lavorare per salvaguardare la nostra salute. Indosso ancora la mascherina ovunque io vada, per proteggere coloro che sono più anziani e più vulnerabili”.
Un sogno nel cassetto…
“Wow, non mi è mai stato chiesto quale sia il mio sogno nel cassetto! Diciamo che ha qualcosa a che fare con trascorrere un po’ di tempo in Italia in vacanza……è davvero uno dei paesi più belli del mondo”.
INTERVIEW WITH RACHAEL CARPANI
It’s available on Amazon Prime Video, now in Australia and soon in Europe too, your latest film “The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee”. How it was working with living legend Paul Hogan?
“Yes, The Very Excellent Mr Dundee premiered on Amazon Prime Video on July 17 and hopefully many more dates to come. And yes, many do refer to Paul Hogan as a living legend, but all the pre-conceived ideas of a person usually disappear for me before I begin work with them on set. Seeing them as simply your co-star and fellow actor and not a “living legend” the fact that makes it easier to communicate ideas equally from each actor to the director, and most importantly if you are doing a comedy, feeling equal allows you to work as a team and allows you to feel your voice is as important as everyone else’s. Paul himself was so welcoming and easy to work with, he was easy to chat to in between takes and has definitely earned his reputation as a storyteller! he has so many anecdotes despite his age, would have so much energy, every single day of the shoot, and he and our wonderful Director Paul Murphy have been collaborating for so many years on many of Pauls projects, they worked together seamlessly, and soon i was able to blend in with the casual nature of how the set was run Paul, it was a great experience”.
Can you introduce us to Angie, your character?
“My Character is Angie Douglas. I play Paul Hogan’s Talent Manager. I spend most of the film trying to get the reluctant Paul to meet with studio executives to re-ignite his career. She inherited the Paul as client from her father, and honestly doesn’t really enjoy trying to manage Paul’s career, but once she finds out that Paul Hogan is in the running the receive a “Knighthood “from the Palace, she unexpectedly finds her new job is attempting to keep him out of trouble for just a few weeks until he flies to the U.K. to receive the Knighthood. As you soon find out, this is a nearly impossible job!”.
Can you tell us some anecdotes that happened on the set?
“Honestly like most sets, you are mostly waiting around if you are an actor, there is a lot of sitting and waiting whilst the crew set up the next scene. But of course there was the usual mistakes which led to uncontrollable laughter, but with Paul Hogan, there was always a moment where you looked up and he was, for some inexplicable reason, redoing the scene with an Elvis wig on or something……he loves making fun of people or events, that’s how he started out, on a ‘skit’ show here in Australia, and i think that’s still his first love”.
Among the roles you played there is Jodi Fountain in “McLeod’s Daughters”, a very popular TV series also here in Italy. What are your memories about this drama?
“I am so glad to hear that McLeod’s Daughters is still watched and enjoyed in Italy! That warms my heart- as I first began to work on that show as “Jodi Fountain” in 2001. I was quite young and it was the first long term role that I had signed onto. I lived in South Australia (moved from my home town of Sydney) to shoot McLeod’s for just over 6 years, it was basically my entire life for that time. I can honestly say it was the hardest, most wonderful, educational job I have ever had in my life, still to this day. The producers and writers gave me an opportunity that not many actors get, the chance to grow their character on screen over many years….in a sense, allowing the audience and the fans the chance to grow up with Jodi over those six and a half seasons Jodi was on McLeod’s Daughters. It was a real working farm, we had real farmers and cowboys teaching us every day, the house was real, there was no studio, we worked through the hottest Australian Summers and the freezing South Australian winters – as did the entire crew- and i do believe it toughened me up, helped me grow up and definitely prepared me for this industry. The show, the land, the characters, the crew, everything about the lovely Jodi… from the “high” voice I gave her, her overly expressive hands when she spoke, and her lack of coordination skills and her never ending dreams of love and adventure were what I loved about her, and to this day thank the writers for allowing me to lean into a character who was more about failing that succeeding. Jodi always saw the brighter side of life, and I guess I wanted to play a character who could make you laugh at her while she was laughing at what life threw at her. It was truly amazing part of my life and Mcleod’s Daughters shall remain in my heart forever”.
Posie Graeme-Evans has announced that she’s writing the story for the reboot “McLeod’s Daughters Movie”. Would you like to take part?
“Yes I am aware of the McLeod’s Daughters feature Film being written, as announced by Posie Graeme- Evans, and honestly no one knows who will be taking part, where it will be set or what characters will return….but I am sure most actors would love to revisit their roles from Drovers Run”.
In the film “The way back” with Ben Affleck, instead, you play the role of Diane…
“Yes, I had a small role in “The Way Back” Directed by the amazing Gavin O’Conner. It was a smaller role, although a great experience and I was only shooting in L.A. for a couple of weeks, right before I flew to Melbourne to begin shooting The Very Excellent Dundee”.
What is your experience to act with Doris Roberts in “Touched by Romance”?
“It breaks my heart that Doris Roberts is no longer with us, I had a wonderful experience working aside her in the film “Touched”. Essentially I play a nurse who is hired to care for an ill woman who is dying. She once was a hugely successful novelist and my character helps her find her inner joy, reconcile with her son, see the beauty there is still left to see in the world and face death as yet another beautiful part of life. It was one of my favourite roles”.
Do you have Italian origins?
“My Father was born in Ascoli Piceno in the province of Marche. He and his family immigrated to Sydney Australia in 1956, and has lived here ever since, although he has made many trips for work back to Italy. We have travelled back to my father’s home town as a family and I have taken every opportunity I had to travel and experience Italy and all it has to offer….especially the food. (my favourite being Olive all’ascolana!)”.
What are your next plans?
“Haha I always like to surprise people by keeping my plans a secret….for now!”
How did you live the weeks of lockdown?
“I was only officially in quarantine for about 3 weeks, but then with restrictions changing all the time for different countries, here in Australia I really only left the house to buy essentials. I consider myself very lucky to have been able to stay home- and am so extremely grateful to all our essential and frontline health workers who continue to work to keep us safe. Is still wear a mask wherever I go, to protect those who are older and more vulnerable”.
A secret wish…
“Wow I’m not sure!! I’ve never been asked what my secret wish would be! Lets say it would have something to do with spending some time in Italy on a holiday……it truly is one of the most beautiful countries in the world”.
